ATTENDANCE at the SPECIAL July 31st GUHSD Governing Bd meetings is necessary... there will be a Board vote on the future of Alpine HS!

Re: July 10th GUHSD Governing Board Meeting

Last night the Grossmont Board devoted most of its monthly meeting to hear the details of the new bond proposal from Superintendent Collins. We had a very favorable showing by the folks from Alpine. Speaking on behalf of the new bond were Alpine residents Barbara Lowe, Bill Weaver, Mindi Adkins, Jim Perkins, Todd Nielson and Sal Casamassima.

In addition, there were several other speakers such as Ernie Ewin, La Mesa City Councilman and Julie Campos, Grossmont High School PTA and BAC - R&R Subcommittee member, who both supported the bond. By count there were about 12+ in favor versus just 2 who were critical of the bond. Once again Alpine presented a broad array of views and came across as supporting all of the schools and not just Alpine. Alpine is being noticed by the Board in a positive way.

In a nutshell... The Superintendent proposed a $417M bond to cover the new 12th Alpine/Blossom Valley high school, and all other remaining Prop H work and additional basic infrastructure to the existing schools such as gyms and cafeterias. There was specific bond language presented that was drafted by the firm that did the feasibility study. The language was cleverly crafted to elicit the most favorable reaction from the voters.

There was also a detailed outline of all of the work planned under the new bond that clearly had a lot of input from Gafcon Harris and was presented by Katy Wright of Gafcon. It also appears that staff (Asst. Superintendent and Business Manager , Scott Patterson and Facilities Director, Bob Kiesling) are clearly on board with Superintendent Collins in promoting the new bond and Patterson stated that there will be a detailed "application" presented to the SD Taxpayers Association by July 25 to get their endorsement.

Also notable was the presence of both Leonel Sanchez and Don Sevrens from the Union Tribune. Last night demonstrated, if nothing else, a clear shift in momentum favorable to modernizing the GUHSD is happening and likely will be reported on by the media. The final Board vote is still scheduled for July 31. We urge all of you again to attend that critical meeting if you possibly can. We are (very) cautiously optimistic that we will get a 5-0 Board vote for the bond proposal.

If that miracle occurs then we need to turn our attention very quickly to the next step of drumming up support for the November ballot. Your presence at the July 31st meeting will help and put pressure on the board to unanimously support the new bond and the Long Range Facilities Master Plan (LRFMP) for GUHSD as proposed, which includes building the new high school for our children locally.

clip_image002.jpgSeptember 27, 2007 - The Grossmont Union High School District introduced its new superintendent last night.

Robert Collins, a longtime administrator in the Los Angeles Unified School District, was the governing board's unanimous choice to lead the 24,000-student East County district.

“We are standing as one behind him,” trustee Richard Hoy said.

Collins was given a nearly four-year contract that starts in November and expires June 30, 2011.

Trustee Larry Urdahl said he hopes Collins will help restore the district's reputation as a “Crown Jewel of Education.”

Collins said he looks forward to meeting that challenge.

At a board meeting (03/08/07), the Grossmont Unified High School District unanimously voted to proceed with Environmental Impact Reviews (EIRs) on three (3) sites…
  1. Site J - Lazy A horse ranch on East Alpine Boulevard,
  2. Site B - Wright's Field south of the town center, and
  3. Site G - Chocolate Summit overlooking Cajon Valley's new middle school at Dunbar Lane
Of the original chosen four (4) sites being still considered, they dropped Site C, Tom Dyke's property, along North Tavern Road, after closed session discussion and review.

The comparative numerical summary has changed from what the Bond Advisory Committee’s Sites Subcommittee had been provided for its review.  The Lazy A is now up-ranked to the #1 site, with Wright's Field falling to #2.

The back-up analysis summary sheets which give insight as to how these rankings, or determinations, were made are provided; (Click Here To Review)
